`Reflections`, Symphonic Sketch from the series` Tribute to the Master ` (On the 100th anniversary of Dmitry Shostakovich)

How well do you know your Shostakovich? Here`s the ultimate test and a lively tribute to the master: a symphonic compilation entitled `Reflections` that quotes and cross references about a dozen or so Shostakovich scores. The listener may marvel at how Vyacheslav Nagovitsin, the composer, manages to interweave the quotes so skillfully and seamlessly. It`s a fun ride. Can you identify each of the quotes as they appear?

Funny to meet this piece separately. It is just the third part of Violin Concerto No. 2. Where are previous two?

Schubert sonatas
Commented by:
(17.07.2012 17:15)
As I play the piano, I thought to begin by starting some discussions on Schuberts sonatas and its interpretations.
I`ll start off:
The sonatas composed in Schuberts youth are worth listening and playing. In collections you don`t find them so often. But M. Dalberto made a fine interpretation.

Great.
But more info on recording.
There should be a edit-button on the line of the description so that uploaders later can add additional info.
There is simply too little or no info on what is uploaded !!!

Audio-quality

I keep adding comments myself about this, but anyway, I find it interesting to have the best quality in sound on my receiver.
The question is :
When you play it directly from the site, is it as good as after a download, which apparently is mp3 ?

I would even say. There should be room for a cd cover. Front and back. If we can upload photos of ourselves then why not let de music present themselves in full glory.
Good idea. By the way, do you know how to upload?

Symphony №21. Faust by Goethe (2009)
Composer:
Sergey Slonimsky
. Artist:
Valeriy Gergiev
Commented by:
Opus147
(15.07.2012 22:01)
This may be a recording of the premiere of Slonimsky`s 21st Symphony, which took place in the Mariinsky Theater on 17 January 2010 during the `New Horizons` festival under the baton of Valery Gergiev.
The composer says about his 21st Symphony: `... to me it seems that the essence of the symphony is enclosed in the idea that it is a musical diary, without words, about our time and about our very dreadful era.`

Opus147

I believe this work is also known as Concerto Buffo for flute, trumpet, percussion and strings.
If so, it is from LP Melodiya D 021387-8 with E. Serov leading the Leningrad Phil CO, a disc that also contains works by Telemann and Webern.

Piano Sonata №17 in d-moll (1801-02)
Composer:
Ludwig van Beethoven
. Artist:
Wilhelm Kempff
Commented by:
(15.07.2012 19:12)
Why do you think Kempff is so Beethovenian.
What is meant by this ?
I know many think of Kempff as a master Beethoven interpreter. Who am I to disagree.
But we should be clear when we say such things.
For instance, A. Schiff, waiting long years before recording the Beethoven cycle is simply superb.
More Beethovenian, I don`t know, but he lets every voice in the score speak, as a Bach phenomenon he can do this
masterly.
This is something very new for me. Sometimes older generations, or some of them pianists, tend to snow under voices.
I try to be as clear as possible.
But yes, Kempff is awesome. But ranking him against Brendels, Schiffs, Pollinis, Lewis,... we cannot, as this is impossible and too subjective.
Do you have a favourite Beethoven interpreter in our age ?
