Radio-Sinfonie-Orchester Frankfurt

Written under the influence of the events of World War II and a personal tragedy – the death of the composer’s brother in 1940. The music is dominated by marching rhythms, militaristic fanfares and dramatic tension.
Critics often note the strong influence of Dmitri Shostakovich (especially his 5th and 7th symphonies) in the symphony.
Despite European influences, Antheil sought to create an `American style,` combining a powerful brass section and vibrant percussion with lyrical asides.
