This TV movie-opera was created based on the work of Boris Asafyev `Treasurer`, who, in turn, translated into the language of the opera the poem by M.Y.Lermontov `Tambov Treasurer'. The action takes place at the beginning of the XIX century in provincial Tambov. The calm, measured life of the town is disrupted by the arrival of the Uhlan regiment. The old treasurer arranges a ball, at which he loses his entire fortune and his beautiful wife to the young ulan Garin at cards.
