In his later years, Larsson moved away from the strict neoclassicism and romantic pastorals that brought him early fame in Sweden. In his Third String Quartet, he employs elements of free serial technique (dodecaphony), but refracts it through the prism of lyricism and transparent Scandinavian melancholy.
