Sveaborg Swedish Sveaborg - `Swedish Fortress` or Suomenlinna Finnish Suomenlinna - `Finnish Fortress` is a bastion fortification system on islands near Helsinki built by the Swedes in the 18th century. Until the mid-20th century the fortifications protected Helsinki from the sea; since the 1960s they have housed a museum and residential area.
