The series is inspired by impressions from a visit to Kyoto`s Zen gardens in the summer of 1993.
The work consists of six parts, each named after a specific garden:
1. Tenju-an (Tenju-an Garden of Nanzen-ji Temple) - an introduction introducing the main instruments.
2. Kinkaku-ki (`Many Pleasures`) - a faster and rhythmically complex movement with an airy cymbal sound.
3. Tenryu-ji (Dry Mountain Stream) - an energetic piece using wood, stone and leather.
4. Ryoan-ji (Ryoanji Rock Garden) is the longest and most meditative part of the cycle.
5. Saiho-ji (Moss Garden of Saiho-ji) - focuses on coloristic nuances.
6. Daisen-in (Stone Bridges)
