The series is inspired by impressions from a visit to Kyoto`s Zen gardens in the summer of 1993.
The work consists of six parts, each named after a specific garden: 1. Tenju-an (Tenju-an Garden of Nanzen-ji Temple) - an introduction introducing the main instruments. 2. Kinkaku-ki (`Many Pleasures`) - a faster and rhythmically complex movement with an airy cymbal sound. 3. Tenryu-ji (Dry Mountain Stream) - an energetic piece using wood, stone and leather. 4. Ryoan-ji (Ryoanji Rock Garden) is the longest and most meditative part of the cycle. 5. Saiho-ji (Moss Garden of Saiho-ji) - focuses on coloristic nuances. 6.
