The title of the play is related to St. Elmo`s Fire, an atmospheric optical phenomenon that appears as quiet discharges in the form of luminous beams at the sharp ends of high-altitude objects (masts, towers, solitary trees, etc.) when the atmospheric electric field is very strong. These discharges occur during storms at sea, as well as during thunderstorms.
In the Middle Ages, they were associated with the name of St. Elmo (Erasmus), the patron saint of sailors in Catholicism. Their appearance promised sailors hope for success, and in times of danger, salvation.
