Written for the Paris Conservatory competition, it is a standard piece in the repertoire of advanced flutists and is often used as an exam piece.
It consists of two contrasting parts:
1. Chanson, in 6/8 time, Andante tempo.
2. Badinerie, in 2/4 time, tempo Allegro assai. It is characterized by technically complex passages (sixteenth notes), virtuosic scale elements, and a light, lively character.
