The plot is an appeal to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, transferred to the context of Mexican culture and the traditions of the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos).
The action takes place in 1957, three years after the death of artist Frida Kahlo. Her gravely ill husband, the renowned muralist Diego Rivera, is lonely and grieving for his late wife. Catrina (the guardian of the underworld) allows Frida to return to the world of the living for exactly 24 hours on the Day of the Dead. Frida initially refuses, remembering the physical suffering she endured in life and her difficult relationship with Diego. Leonardo (the spirit of a young actor from the underworld) inspires Frida to accept the offer and return to art and love. Reunited in the world of the living, Frida and Diego relive their turbulent feelings, passion and pain, finding a long-awaited reconciliation before Diego follows her into the afterlife.
