Greene selected 25 sonnets from Edmund Spenser`s poetry cycle Amoretti (1595).
Unlike most sonnets of the era (for example, those by Petrarch or Shakespeare), which celebrated unrequited, tragic, or secret love, `Amoretti` is the story of a successful courtship culminating in marriage. Spenser dedicated this cycle to his real-life lover and later wife, Elizabeth Boyle.
