The title is taken from a series of plays by Florence Delay and Jacques Roubaud that reimagine the legends of King Arthur and the search for the Holy Grail.
Saariaho described `Grail` as a symbol of the composer`s spiritual quest, and `Theatre` as the physical and theatrical aspect of the performance, embodied in the soloist`s virtuosity.
The music is born from the sound of the violin (harmonics, scales), which is gradually picked up and expanded by the orchestra, creating rich and changing textures.
