It was written in 1919 (according to other sources, in 1921-1922), when the young composer had just entered the Petrograd Conservatory in the class of Maximilian Steinberg.
The work was originally conceived as part of a piano sonata, but was later orchestrated (probably with Steinberg`s assistance).
