The title of the play is related to St. Elmo`s Fire an atmospheric optical phenomenon that appears as quiet discharges in the form of luminous beams at the sharp ends of high-altitude objects masts towers solitary trees etc. when the atmospheric electric field is very strong. These discharges occur during storms at sea as well as during thunderstorms.
In the Middle Ages they were associated with the name of St. Elmo Erasmus the patron saint of sailors in Catholicism. Their appearance promised sailors hope for success and in times of danger salvation.
