Greene selected 25 sonnets from Edmund Spenser`s poetry cycle Amoretti 1595.
Unlike most sonnets of the era for example those by Petrarch or Shakespeare which celebrated unrequited tragic or secret love `Amoretti` is the story of a successful courtship culminating in marriage. Spenser dedicated this cycle to his real-life lover and later wife Elizabeth Boyle.
