Written for the Paris Conservatory competition it is a standard piece in the repertoire of advanced flutists and is often used as an exam piece.
It consists of two contrasting parts
1. Chanson in 6/8 time Andante tempo.
2. Badinerie in 2/4 time tempo Allegro assai. It is characterized by technically complex passages sixteenth notes virtuosic scale elements and a light lively character.
