According to Pirchner himself, he came up with the idea after reading a newspaper article. It told the story of a local doctor who openly revealed that the town`s mayor had been an SS officer during the war and had participated in executions, and that a person with such a past should not hold the mayor`s office. Pirchner considered this revelation good news and gave the work a corresponding title.
