`Aucassin and Nicolette` is an anonymous French literary work from the early 13th century. It is the only surviving work of the unique cantefable genre (song-tale), in which prose excerpts alternate with verse inserts intended to be sung.
The story tells of the love between Aucassin, the son of Count Garin de Beaucaire, and Nicolette, a Saracen slave of unknown origin, bought from pirates.
