The manuscript of these two short movements was found among other unpublished works by the Croatian composer Josip Štolcer Slavenski, titled simply `I` and `II`. The date of their composition is unknown, and the titles suggest that the pieces were intended as a cycle rather than as individual works. Compared to Slavenski’s other piano miniatures, these two are the most absolute in character, as his other pieces bear titles that indicate either the source of the musical material or an extra-musical idea.
